Louvre Museum Paris’ Crown Jewel of Art & History
The Louvre Museum, or Musée du Louvre, is one of the world’s largest and most famous art museums, housing masterpieces from antiquity to the 19th century in the heart of Paris.
As the world’s most visited museum and the largest art museum globally, the Louvre’s 72,735 square meters house approximately 38,000 objects from prehistory to the 21st century. Originally built as the Louvre Castle in 1190 under Philip II, the structure evolved through eight centuries of French history – from medieval fortress to Renaissance palace, and finally to the magnificent museum we know today.
The museum’s collection spans 11 departments including Near Eastern Antiquities, Egyptian Antiquities, Greek/Roman Antiquities, Islamic Art, Sculptures, Decorative Arts, Paintings, Prints and Drawings. The Louvre’s most famous resident, Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, attracts nearly 80% of visitors who come specifically to see her enigmatic smile.
