Cais de Gaia is the first must-go place to have a walk and enjoy the Portuguese atmosphere of the everyday holiday of sun and warmth in Vila Nova de Gaia. Along the riverside of Douro, you get a viewing platform on the Downtown of Porto that is 1.6 kilometers long. Besides, stunning observation angles on three bridges including Dom Luis I Bridge make this promenade one of the most popular locations for tourists all year round. However, this is not the only reason to visit the riverside. Ancient restaurants create a street of unrepeatable experiences in wine-tasting and gastronomic tours. Each of them offers you an impressive list of port wines to try. This is why Cais de Gaia is the best place for wine cellar tours and tasting in the Porto region. Here you will find a range of port wine producers with their own spaces and menus to explore the world of wine. Taylor's, Ferreira, Sandeman, Calem, and other 15 companies of 60 cellars located on this bank of the Douro river.
In front of the buildings of the 19th century, you will have the opportunity to discover a rich market of Portuguese products. Local artists present their jewelry, accessories, and unique clothes in all colours and shapes for travelers to choose the souvenirs to take for themselves and their friends.
The alley of Cais de Gaia is surrounded by a convincing number of boats. From here journeys of all kinds start. You can choose a boat trip of six bridges, to the Douro Valley, or a river taxi to the opposite side of the waterfront. Therefore, this street makes Vila Nova de Gaia a popular touristic place, as well as Porto Ribeira, visible from each point of a wide alley Avenida de Diogo Leite.

Mosteiro de Serra do Pilar

Mosteiro de Serra do Pilar

(the Monastery of Serra do Pilar) takes place in a wonderful location to observe Vila Nova da Gaia and the riverside of Porto Downtown. On the view platform, you feel like you have a balloon ride above the Dom Luis I Bridge.

The Monastery was created after the reform of the Order of St. Augustine. It was the time when the monks of the Grijó monastery moved to the new location. Construction began in 1537. It features a plan that includes a circular church, rectangular chancel, and the cloister, also circular in plan. All parts of the building are arranged sequentially.
Mosteiro de Serra do Pilar is one of the most significant buildings of classical European architecture due to its circular church and cloister. It combines Renaissance and Mannerist styles. You can observe the elaborated bell tower and dormitories on the north of the structure, and the sacristy and refectory on the south. The church of the Monastery of Serra do Pilar stands out over the riverside of Douro and has 36 meters high. This is 17 meters more than the bell tower, thus, the shape creates impressive dynamics continuing the direction of the rocks at the base of the structure. Temple is one of the rear circular ones in Europe. In 1809 the space of the monastery was occupied by Wellington's troops, then Portuguese, and once by Napoleon's army.
During the 20th century, the monastery was on conservation and restoration. It is included in the Historic Center of Porto and UNESCO World Heritage List.

Reserva Natural Local do Estuário do Douro takes place at the confluence of the Douro River and the Atlantic Ocean. It encapsulates a timeless connection between nature and the Vila Nova de Gaia maritime heritage. Though not directly tied to historical events, its existence echoes the ecological harmony. It has shaped the livelihoods of Porto locals for centuries.
A Biodiversity Tapestry Unfolds
This ecological sanctuary unfolds as a mosaic of diverse habitats, including tidal flats, salt marshes, and mudflats. Serving as a crucial stopover for migratory birds. The reserve's biodiversity fosters a delicate balance within the estuarine ecosystem. This is an amazing place to have a pause between the bustling days and have a rest listening to the melody of waves.   As the tides rhythmically ebb and flow, they echo the historical journey of this maritime haven. The estuary, a gateway for maritime activities, holds the imprints of time, narrating tales of trade, exploration, and cultural exchange. Like the tides, it reflects the cyclical nature of history, where each wave carries remnants of the past and ushers in new narratives. This metaphor encapsulates the rich tapestry of the estuary's role as a dynamic conduit through the annals of time.
How to Get There
Easily accessible from Porto, the reserve beckons nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers to embark on a short journey. Whether by car or public transport, the scenic route unfolds as part of the overall experience. By bus: [902]  + 8 min on foot On foot: 30 min from Ponte da Arrábida This place can be a marvelous destination for a day-walk from Porto City. Take your closest or make this trip by yourself and enjoy the views of Douro River along all of the riverside. You will be amased by natural beauty and relaxing atmosphere of the coast.
Interesting Fact
You will be able to find out about the estuary's secrets and discover the elusive seahorses that inhabit these waters. This Natural Park stands as one of the few places where these enchanting creatures can be observed in their natural habitat.   The estuary's banks host a diverse array of plant life, from resilient salt-tolerant species to lush coastal vegetation. This botanical symphony not only adds aesthetic beauty but also plays a crucial role in stabilizing the ecosystem and providing habitats for various organisms.
Travel Tip for Visit
For an immersive experience, plan your visit during the migratory seasons when flocks of birds grace the estuary. Opt for guided boat tours that provide a unique perspective, allowing you to witness the dynamic interplay between land and water. Reserva Natural Local do Estuário do Douro will be your place to clean your mind and recharge your batteries for a new achievement.   For bird enthusiasts, the estuary is a paradise. The skies and shores come alive with the calls and flights of numerous avian species. Migratory birds find solace here, creating a dynamic environment where different feathered residents coexist and contribute to the area's ecological balance.   While traditional walking tours may not be applicable to this natural reserve, consider exploring the adjacent areas of Porto through guided walking tours. These tours often include insights into the city's history, incorporating the estuary as part of the broader narrative.
