Formed by the relentless flow of Fell Beck stream through limestone bedrock, Gaping Gill is part of the Ingleborough cave system, one of the longest in Britain. First explored in the 19th century, its main chamber—the “Main Shaft”—was famously descended by French caver Édouard-Alfred Martel in 1895 using a rope ladder.
Twice a year (May and August), local caving clubs set up a temporary winch system, allowing visitors to descend into the cavern like professional cavers:
